Activities of Writers Guild of Japan


I. Activities for protection of copyright:

WGJ has established the lowest scenario fee by the Collective Agreements and bargained with producers about the scenario fee of each member of WGJ.

WGJ accepts entrustment of the broadcasting right, right of transmission to public, right of cinematographic presentation, reproduction right, and distribution right from scenario writers, and with the right of representation from scenario writers, WGJ grants the license for the adaptation right, publishing right and performance right under the following terms and conditions.

Regarding WGJ's repertoire, the royalty is collected and distributed under the Rules of Fees approved by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and also under agreements executed with more than 10,000 organizations including broadcasting companies, producers, cable transmission entrepreneurs, video rental stores, etc.

II. Health & Welfare Activities

A scenario writer is an individual entrepreneur, and holds very unstable social and economic position in Japan.

Under such conditions, the purpose of the health and welfare activities is to improve as much as possible such conditions making the scenario writers enable to engage in writing activities in more comfortable environments.

1.
Health insurance:
  Procedures for subscription for the Literature and Artistic National Health Insurance Association.

2.
Cooperative plan:
  Procedures for subscription and administration of the Small-size Enterprises Mutual Benefit Plan.

3.
Indemnity insurance:
  Procedures for subscription and administration of the indemnity insurance.

4.
Life insurance:
  Subscription and introduction of life insurance.

5.
Physical examination:
  Physical examination is conducted once in a year for the member of WGJ and their families.

6.
Payment for celebration and condolence money:
  The money for celebration or condolence is paid at the time of celebration or mourning of the member of WGJ and their families.

7.
Payment of pension:
  For a member of WGJ whose age is 60years old or more, the pension in an amount equivalent to the annual membership fee (fixed amount of membership fee) shall be paid.

8.
Tax consultation:
  Guidance and consultation mainly with regard to tax matters for the final tax return.

9.
Consultation for financial matters:
  Consultation for financial matter of the member of WGJ.

10. Joint purchase of various type of equipment and supplies.

III. Educational project

In Japan, an educational organization for the practical method of writing scenarios is equivalent to none at all, and for the purpose of educating and fostering scenario writers for the next generation who will be the basis of the existence of WGJ, we have been managing the educational programs with members of WGJ as the lecturers.(>>HOMEPAGE OF WRITERS SCHOOL

Classroom for scenario writers:
  This classroom is a center of the educational programs comprising the regular course, training course and correspondence course. At the present, we are educating and fostering the scenario writers not limited to those the broadcasting industry.

2.
Classroom for lyric writers:
  This classroom is comprising the regular course, training course and correspondence course and has been managed with the cooperation of the Japan Lyricists Association. The classroom is engaging in education and fostering of the lyric writers.

3.
Classroom for education and fostering of free writers:
  This classroom is comprising the regular course and advance course, and has been engaging in education and fostering of all kinds of writers including journalists.

IV. Other Activities

1.
Intermediary business regarding the use of works of our members.

2.
Introduction and intermediary of works requested by broadcasting companies or production companies.

3.
Publication of "scenario Writers' News".
  As the newspaper for the public relation of WGJ, published monthly.

4.
Publication of "Annual of Writers":
  Published annually for the list of members of WGJ and report on activities of WGJ.

5.
Publication of "Collection of Outstanding Works of Television Drama".
  Published once in a year as the selection of outstanding dramas for the year.

6.
Monitoring of broadcasting programs
